Dr. S.N. Omkar

Dr. S. N. Omkar is working as the Chief Research Scientist (CRS) at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. He has a B.E in Mechanical Engineering from Bangalore University, M.Sc and Ph.D in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.

His research interests include Satellite image processing, Biomechanics, Yoga, Uninhabited Air Vehicles (UAV), and nature-inspired algorithms. Dr. Omkar heads the Computational Intelligence lab, the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles lab and the Biomechanics lab. He is also pursuing several projects and research work in the area of image processing and UAVs. He has developed a number of algorithms and used them for a variety of applications like road extraction, flood assessment, crop classification, crop growth analysis, etc. The other facet of Dr. Omkar's research includes composite design optimization using nature inspired techniques. He has also pioneered in using biomechanics for aerospace applications. This is of significance in the light of the country's interest in human space mission. He has established a laboratory facility towards this.

Dr. Omkar has more than 130 journal publications, has presented papers in more than 100 conferences, which include both national and international conferences. Till date, he has imparted training to more than 1000 interns. He is also a member of many academic committees. He has introduced many courses at IISc. He has conducted several workshops and outreach programs for students.

Dr. Omkar is also a celebrated practitioner and teacher of Yoga. He has been conferred the Karnataka State Rajyothsava Award from the Government of Karnataka and the Kempegowda Award from Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike for his contributions in the field of Yoga.
